Pontefract Park is located just a mile north of Pontefract town centre. The park has a race course, which is the longest used continuous flat racing circuit in Europe, a large lake, a 9 hole golf course, tennis courts, fishing, the largest aero-modellers club in the UK – PANDA (Pontefract and District Aero-modellers club), free parking and several routes for walking and cycling. The park is also a location where several events happen throughout the year from fairs to fun days.
Pontefract Park lake and walks
There is a walk for everyone around this park. The walk around the lake is a nice small one and is lovely whether you have the sun bouncing off the lake or a fresh winter morning.
There are always plenty of swans, ducks and birds ready to greet you and the kids love feeding them.
|If you fancy a longer walk you can walk across the grassed area in the centre of the park to a second smaller pond at the north east corner. The walk across the playing fields have no paths and may be muddy occasionally.
If you prefer a less muddy walk you can walk around the inside of the race course. There are two small tracks all the way around. This walk is a favourite for dog walkers and joggers and you will always have someone to greet.
You can even walk all the way to Xscape, Castleford. The route takes the tarmac surfaced road behind the Racecourse buildings. Why not treat yourself to some lunch at before heading back 🙂
Childrens play area
There is an enclosed childrens play area in the park. The play area is split into two areas to separate the toddlers and the older children. The area has two sets of swings, two slides, roundabout and climbing frame. The area is quite large and gets busy in the summer months. The area also benefits from a bouncy castle and an ice cream van on hot summer days and makes it a fun day out for the kids.

The event is free but you do need to register before your first run. You will be given a barcode which you bring with you to the race and this lets the volunteers track your time. Your data is stored on their website so you can count your runs, best time etc.
