Pontefract Christmas Light Switch On 2017
The nights are drawing in and that can only mean one thing … the annual Christmas Lights Switch-on event in the local area.
Pontefract Town Centre was the first on the calendar. We joined the festive event from around 4.30pm and enjoyed a variety of entertainment on the Market Place, leading up to the big switch-on event around 6.30pm.
Ridings FM presented the evening from a large stage area with vocal performances from Kaci J. There was also St. Giles Pantomime who entertained the crowds with sing alongs which the kids very much enjoyed!
The kids asked to see Santa. He was in St. Giles Church. When we met Santa the kids discreetly and reliably informed that Santa’s beard was real, so he must be the real thing!
When we came out from visiting Santa the crowds had certainly built up, it was a surprisingly good turn-out. The lights were switched on by the Haribo Bear, and local councillors, shortly after Christmas music played and fake snow was projected from the stage! It certainly did put you in the Christmas spirit.
As some people may know the lights have been provided by Haribo at a cost of around £40k. What ever your opinion on the lights being Haribo sweets, I don’t think anyone could say that they do not look impressive when you are stood underneath them! They cover the entire precinct and surrounding streets. They are certainly lights to remember!
We ended the evening by visiting the Christmas tree which is located near the town hall.
