IT’S COOL TO BE SQUARE! HOW A PUMPKIN IS TACKLING BULLYING
Local Farmer, Robert Copley has over the past 5 years created the largest Pumpkin Festival in the country! It started with his farming research trips to USA, where taking the ‘experience out onto the farm’ and ‘education through fun’ is King. The secret to his success we believe is down to the humble pumpkin, the festival is ALL about the Pumpkin, Harvest, Autumn, Food and Fun.
Robert grows thousands of the traditional round orange pumpkins that we are familiar with which are fabulous fun to carve and then make Pumpkin Soup with the flesh. Over the years Robert has discovered and sourced seeds from an array of pumpkins, then some squash & gourds. The result is a rainbow of pumpkins across the 20 acres of Pumpkin Fields at Pontefract.
He even grows Square Pumpkins! There is a story which is quick becoming a legend. The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin, ‘One day in the pumpkin patch, the strangest little pumpkin hatched. Spookley wasn’t like his friends – where they had curves he had ends.’ The story goes on to tell how Spookley was picked on and bullied but one night a terrible storm blew into the bay and ‘brave little Spookley knew what he had to do to save the day!’ The story concludes with a very important message to everybody any age, any colour and religion… ‘Maybe one day we all will discover – you can’t judge a book, or a pumpkin, by its cover.’ The story is a great way to communicate anti-bullying with children and adults alike in a fun yet sensitive manner. At the pumpkin festival there is a story telling tent, where throughout the day the Spookley story is told by our very own Mrs Pumpkin, new for 2016 is Spooky Poetry at 1pm daily.
The Spookley story is also encompassed into our Pumpkin School Visits (which were booked up completely for 2016), with a visit around the fields learning all about pumpkins and farming, we also cover many areas of the curriculum and provide a resources pack for teachers to use when they return to school. Our own little ‘soap box’ is to get the children to eat some pumpkin soup, pork and pumpkin sausage, pumpkin, cake, pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie and pumpkin loaf – telling our story of field to fork and that pumpkins are not just for Jack-o-lanterns, they are also great to eat!
So this October come down to the farm and pick your pumpkin which could be white, orange, blue, red, green or yellow, smooth, warty, large, small, round, oval! Then join us in the poly tunnels to carve the pumpkins, then eat pumpkin! CELEBRATE PUMPKINS, CELEBRATE AUTUMN. There are lots of other activities including a fancy dress parade, bucking pumpkin ride, barrel ride. The Witches Kitchen will keep you warm with Pumpkin Soup and Warm Pumpkin Cake with Lashings of Hot Custard. DON’T PANIC if you don’t like eating pumpkin there’s everything else you can imagine including our famous Hog Roast.
The celebrations of the humble pumpkin continue in the farm shop with Pumpkin Pie, Pumpkin Bread, Pumpkin Loaf, Pork & Pumpkins Sausage etc all your trick and treat sweets and fancy house & home fall decorations. Don’t miss out on a spiced pumpkin latte or a Boo-nilla shake!
